      (Col.) John5 Bulkeley (Joseph*, Peter3, Edward2, Peter1), born at Concord, Mass., in 1703, died at Groton, Mass., 3 Dec. 1772; married first, Abigail5 Wright, born at Concord, 9 Oct. 1707, died at Groton, 15 Apr. 1747; married second, at Westford, Mass., 29 June 1748, Mary Underwood, born 28 Oct. 1711, died at Groton in 1799.

      He was graduated from Harvard College; commissioned in 1767, Colonel of the Middlesex County Regt. His first wife's great-great-grandmother was Martha (Bulkeley) Mellowes, sister of Rev. Peter Bulkeley.

      "He left a sorrowful widow, four Daughters & one son, named John, by whom this family tomb was built."

      John Bulkley of Groton, Esq., by his will dated 23 Nov. 1772, proved 22 Dec. 1772, gave to wife Mary the use and improvement of one third part of the house where I live and other property, and life use of specified movables; to daughter Mary wife of Samuel Tuttle, 1 and all the furniture that was conveyed to me "by her late Husband Abel Lawrence Esq' Deceased" by his deed of 1767 ; to grandson Abel Lawrence, 20; to granddaughter Mary Lawrence, 10; to each of daughters, Rebecca Prescott, Abigail Ames, and Elizabeth Green, 100, part now and part after wife's decease; to daughter Abigail, with same proviso, "my Great Bible," and to daughter Elizabeth my silver Tankard ; six months after wife's demise all household goods to be equally divided between the four daughters, Mary, Rebecca, Abigail, and Eliza beth; to son, John Bulkley, Jr., remainder of estate and a clock, also "my armour," he to be Executor. Citation 18 Dec. 1772 to Samuel Tuttle and Mary his wife, to Jonas Prescott and Rebecca his wife, to Amos Ames and Abigail his wife, daughters of the deceased, to the widow, and to John Bulkley.

      The will of Mary Bulkley of Groton, dated 5 May 1792, gave legacies to her three brothers, Jonathan Underwood of Marl borough, N. H., Timothy Underwood of Putney, Vt., and James
      Underwood, Esq., of Merrimack, and various other relatives of her own, also legacies to John-Bulkley Lawrence, son of Abel Lawrence of Salem, distiller, to Betsey-Bulkley Ames, daughter of Amos Ames of Groton, to Abigail wife of Amos Ames, and to Jonas Prescott of Westford; her inventory was taken 16 Oct. 1799; estate insolvent.

      Children by second wife, born at Groton:

      860 viii. John, b. 22 June 1749; d. 16 Dec. 1774. He was graduated from Harvard College, 1769, and became the first lawyer in Groton. "A good natural genius improv'd by a liberal Edu cation." In his will, made 2 Dec. 1774, proved 10 Jan. 1775, he gave to his mother Mary Bulkley the life use of the homestead farm; nephew John-Bulkley Green to have said farm when of age and after decease of testator's mother, he paying flOO to my niece Polly Green, 200 to the children of the late Abel Lawrence, Esq., and my sister Mary his late wife, to the children of Lieut. Jonas Prescott, Jr., and my sister Rebecca his wife, to the children of Amos Ames and my sister Abigail his wife, as shall then be living, the Ames children to have a double share. Provision was made in case John-Bulkley Green, or his sister Polly Green, or both, should die without issue before reaching their majority. His mother was to have the use of the clock, but the clock must stay in the house. On 28 Mar. 1776, Jonas Prescott, Jr., of Westford appealed from the will. An inventory, 17 Apr. 1781, showed that he was a man of wealth. Administration de bonis non was granted, 8 Jan. 1799, to Abel Prescott of Groton, with Jonas Prescott of Westford, Gent., and James Spaulding of Ashburnham, as sureties.
