This is currently our only evidence that in 1828, Joseph's wife was Abigail.

    • Inferred from census dates. Long comparisons with dna key insights from Donna Ulrich lead me to think she is d. of Edward P Moore and Ada Wormwood. It fits in many ways. 1800, 1810, 1820 census imply birth 1785-1790.

  • Notes
    • She is reported as being from ME in 1880 census for James K Ames

After a lot of digging around, even getting some early deeds, I could show that the father of James, Joseph Ames, lived in Hancock Co Maine from bef 1807 until about 1815, when he went with his wife Abigail (named in a deed) to Bradford, Penobscot, ME where James K was born in 1822. In 1810, they lived in Twp 8, what is now known as Franklin. I know from a deed that he was of Trenton, Hancock in 1814 in a land purchase, according to a biography of Rev Moses Ames, almost certainly his son, the latter was born in Surry, Hancock in 1812, and Joseph signed a document to the MA state legislature concerning Ellsworth ME in 1807. In a 4th cousin (95% prob of common ancestry) tree from a person in MA, I saw all Maine lines. Since I knew that the connection was 4th-6th cousin with high likelihood I knew when the common ancestor had to be born, sometime around/before 1800. Census records from 1810-1830 make Joseph b. about 1775 and Abigail his wife b. about 1785-90, so Joseph could not have married until about 1805, so probably he married a local girl in Hancock county. Also first recorded kid, Mary, was born 1808. The matching tree meandered all over Maine, but just at the critical moment, one line localized exactly on Ellsworth ME (Josiah Garland and Miriam Moore). Subsequent looking found exactly the same couple in another DNA hit tree, and then the same Garlands appeared in a third. Of course I have looked for an Abigail Garland or Moore (and related names), haven't found her yet. The records are terrible so early, especially in this literally backwoods part of the state.

There cannot be certainty about Abigail's parents. However, thanks in significant measure to donamary "the Moore's of Mariaville", it seems most likely that she is d of Edward Proctor Moore and Adah Wormwood. This is strongly consistent with many DNA matches, and also the existence of a daughter named Abby Ames Moore, of Alexander B Moore and Temperance Garland. Abigail would fit perfectly there chronologically, and also would be the Aunt of Alexander. Finally it is known that there are unpublished children of E P Moore, according to the work of Mark Honey.

The most plausible alternative, also reasonably consistent with DNA is that she could be daughter of Joseph Moore Sr (the brother of Edward P Moore) and his wife Olive Gilpatrick. The occurrence of Abby Ames Moore in the Edward family makes me lean that way. But Joseph/Olive cannot be ruled out at this point.

I note that there is a Nabby Butterfield that has been linked to our Joseph at familysearch. I know of no reason for this, but am trying to find out more.
