  • Notes
    • In "Some acct of the Cone family in America" by Wm Whitney Cone (p 120) Samuel is listed as son of David Cone. It also states that that he had no children, which is incorrect. In fact there are at least three described in Fisher's History of Clinton Maine: Samuel Jr. Oliver and David. Isaac Cone is certainly another son based on his marriage records. I think William and Jane are most probably his too. They are all documented in census or marriage records in the tiny settlement of Clinton, ME ca. 1800.
A veteran of the Revolution, who enlisted in Saybrook, CT and lived to be about 94, living for many years in Clinton Maine and in Hampden, Maine.

      For Jerusha Walker, http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~meandrhs/census/maine/hampden/1837.html
Note: a recent DNA "hit" verifies that Samuel is an ancestor. Its probable that he is son of David. He named one of his sons David.

Based on CT records, I leaned toward Jonathan and Sarah Hungerford as parents, but David and Temperance Pratt seem to be very good matches for DNA overlaps and I see nothing from Hungerford to balance the argument. In view of the naming conventions and DNA, I think its very likely that David Cone and Temperance Pratt are the parents of Samuel.

Description of Clinton, from Varney's Gazeteer

Clinton lies between the Kennebec and Sebasticook Rivers, and is the most north-easterly town in Kennebee County. It is bounded on the north by Canaan and Pittsfield, inSomerset County, east by Burnham, in Waldo County south by Benton, and west by Fairfield, in Kennebee County. Itcontains several small streams, aside from the two rivers that bound it. The town was within the limits of thePlymouth Patent. At the time of settlement (about 1775) there were abundant forests of pine, while the Sebasticookand other streams offered ample water-power. The first political organization within the township was in the plantationof Hancock, at or before 1790, at which date the inhabitants numbered 278. It was incorporated as the one hundredand first town in Maine under the name of Clinton in 1795. Among those early in business in the place were Josephand James North, sons of Hon. Joseph North of Augusta. They operated in lumber, and were also engaged in trade.Another of the early business men of the town was Gershom Flagg, son of Gershom Flagg, of Boston, who had chargeof building Fort Halifax, at the mouth of the Sehasticook. The latter was also one of the proprietors of the PlymouthPatent, and received from this company a grant of land in the township. At the village in the south-eastern partof the town are one or more saw-mills, and a door and sash factory, a grain-mill, a mill with carding, cloth-dressingand brush-block machinery. Pishon's Ferry, on the Kenebec, is the other principal centre of business. The trunkline of the Maine Central Railroad runs through the south-eastern portion of the town. The surface of the townis quite level. The soil is a clay loam, yielding good crops of hay.
