From pension application of wife of Joseph Tourtellott, son of Abraham T (b 1725). A very valuable, and probably authoritative list of kids of Abraham (1725). I am still suspicious that there might have been a first wife, and it is contrary to the times that there is no son Abraham on the list. I also just learned that there is a Will on file in the CT State Library.

  • Notes
    • Thanks to Dr Bruce Steiner for a remarkable find. Israel Harrington of Easton NY (d 1812) is described to be a "cousin" of Abraham.

Lieutenant and Captain in the Revolutionary War from Rhode Island. [pensioned as a Lieutenant].
There is great confusion about his parents.
There is a statement in Bangor Hist Magazine (Vol 6, Ed. by J Porter) that he was 'said to be the son of Benjamin Tourtillott" (and JerushaBallard). The article is puzzling in its emphasis of terms like "was said to be" etc -- like it doesn't quite trust itself! From chronology, seems unlikely that Ben is the father and most certainly Jerusha Ballard his wife is not the mother.

      This from the internet:
OK, here is the note: Benjamin is listed as the father of Abraham (1744) in a Bangor Historical Magazine but there is no birth record. If Benjamin fathered Abraham (1744), then Benj. would have been 14 years old at the time -- mighty precocious. My late and very dear great-aunt Lula May Tourtellotte McClure, who prepared this genealogical research, posited that Abraham (1744) was actually the son of Abraham (1725) in his union with Hannah Case given dates and other stuff and I can give you a copy of her paper on the subject. Her sensibilities allowed her to note rumors of illegitimacy but then she went on to disprove the rumors in her own inimitable style. Abraham (1744) went on to serve in the Revolution and became a Captain.
Hannah Case: parents Wm Case and Elizabeth Stafford. here http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=davis&id=I14457&style=TABLE
Also Benjamin had a son named (inevitably) Abraham, and it was almost 10 yers after AT1746 birth that he started his family.

My summary: Benjamin seems too young. the obvious and most popular dad is Abraham (1725). However, testimony from his certain son Joseph in his Rev War pension gives a detailed list of 1725's children. Abraham is not among them. Also there is the attribution of Phoebe Harris as the mother. I can find absolutely no record of this marriage, other than secondary references. Abraham of 1725 certainly did marry Phoebe Thornton and had many children by her. The only relevant Phoebe Harris seems to have been married to an Arnold when she was supposedly married to 1725. Abraham of 1725 is NOT the father of AT(1744), certainly not by his wife, at least.

This leaves us Abraham1698 and Hannah Case. Certainly they were having kids at the right time, but it would imply that 1698 named two sons that made it to manhood Abraham. Weird, maybe not impossible. However, a big problem for this theory is that 1698 mentioned only one Abraham in his Will, while mentioning all the known children with Lydia Ballard and Hannah Case. It appears from the context of the Will that the discussion is about Abraham (1725).

This is a considerable mystery. Were it not for the Will, of 1698 which names all other siblings, I would be inclined to accept Abraham (1744) as son of AT and Hannah Case.

We do know that AT(1744) lived in Glocester, so he just has to be descended *somehow*, possibly a bastard, from AT(1698) or conceivably AT(1725). Our Abraham (1746) has no connection that i know of with CT where 1725 went, but he did live in Glocester for a few years after the revolution, long enough to get into trouble over the Jocktan Cows matter, suggesting that maybe he retained a connection with Glocester and RI.

At this point I think one can say that somehow or other, give his name and his localization in Glocester, that he is a descendant of Abraham T (1698), but that is about all, so far as I can see at this point.
